On October 6th of this upcoming month, live from the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento,Ca Jorger Linares looks for Redemption. It’s seems as though it was just yesterday that Jorge Linares was another one of Freddie Roach’s prized pupils on pace to becoming the talk of the lightweight division. Yet, not unlike Amir Khan, a former Freddie Roach fighter, who now is in limbo as to where he will be fighting next, Linares seems to have an uncertain future. His chin, rather than his heart, has been called into question. After stellar showings, Linares went to Japan only to be knocked out in the 1st round in a manner similar to Khan’s 1st round KO loss to Breidis Prescott. Even in the knock out fight his skill was evident, especially in his untraditional left jab / left uppercut combination thrown at length.

Time passed and Linares fought on the undercard of the Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Juan Diaz II PPV in which he won a very one sided decision. It seemed that maybe the loss was a way for Linares to respond and become a better rounded fighter. Unfortunately, he met Antonio DeMarco at Staples Center. DeMarco stopped him, though not as a quickly as he did John Molina Jr. This time Linares lasted until the 11th round. Surely that shows he is not just a glassed jaw wunderkind technical boxer who will lay down the minute he is petted with a punch. Unfortunately, earlier this year he was once again stopped. That time he was denied by a technical knockout in the 2nd round. So, three out of his past seven fights have ended in knock outs.

This leads to the true point of this story; will we finally see the redemption of Jorge Linares? Linares has the tools and style to be a champion. Do we believe he can take a punch or better yet will respond well if hit hard? The fan in me wants to say he can. I would love nothing more than to have every word in this article turned against me as a fighter shows his strength and overcomes adversity. In actuality, the realist in me fears that after losing two fights in such a violent manner he may just not have it in him. The way Linares looked after the DeMarco fight showed a man of entitlement having it stripped away in a slow plodding manner. Linares looked deeply troubled and not himself.

We are forgetting one other story. The downfall of Freddie Roach. In the summer of 2008, it looked as though Freddie Roach was destined to be a mainstay for years to come with Pacquiao, Khan and Linares. Now, with Linares in the 11th hour of his career and Pacquiao losing to Tim Bradley and then Marquez IV and Khan, getting KOed so bad that he left Roach’s gym. Oh, and let’s not forget the Julio Cesar Chavez Jr experiment that seemed to go all wrong. On the fringes of this October 6 match in Sacramento is the rear view mirror image of Freddie Roach who is now no longer a part of Team Linares. He was replaced by Teiken Boxing trainer Sendai Tanaka. Will this change make as big a difference as Linares believes?

Then there is the question of the foe, Hector Velasquez, who seems to have become the opponent after Humberto “Zorrita” Soto could not come to terms with a fight and the Bay Area’s own Richard Hargraves, whose name was being whispered for a fight before losing a decision in San Diego, Ca on August 30th of this year. Why does that come into play? For a thinking man’s fighter like Linares it would seem that an extended period of time to plan for a fight would benefit him more. For Velasquez, this is the opportunity to show at age 37, with a record that in the past few years has more red than green when looking at the boxrec page, this is a chance for a man with 35 KOs to show that he is no stepping stone. Velasquez most notably lost to the rising star Edwin Valero in a fight that Velasquez was able to stay alive in. If Velasquez three years ago had his moment against Valero, I find it hard to believe that he won’t have any success in this fight.

The action kicks off October 6th, 2012 live from Memorial Auditorium located at 1515 J St in Sacramento, Ca and will be available on TV on Fox Sports affiliates (Please check local listing). To purchase tickets for this event please go to http://purchase.tickets.com/buy/TicketPurchase?agency=TDC&pid=7342309 or to find out about more details surrounding this and future events go please go to http://pacopresentsboxing.com . I know one thing; October 6th will certainly be a historic night in a classic fight town like Sacramento.

In how many ways can I write “The same, but less” (for the record, the answer is 2: English and French: “Le même mais moins”)? Because, really, for all that can, has and will be written about this album, what it is all literally and figuratively amounts to that one phrase.

Literally, it refers to the fact that shortly after the release of their amazing self-titled album, the life of The XX as a quartet came to an end, and their life as a trio began as guitarist Baria Qureshi left the band, citing exhaustion from touring (this has since been seemingly debunked by vocalist and bassist Oliver Sim in this Grantland article, saying that it was a decision the rest of the band made to kick her out before the album tour started). Figuratively, it refers to the general sound of Coexist, which doesn’t attempt to change very much regarding the overall aesthetic of the band, but attempts to achieve it with one element of the success of the previous record missing.

The trio has a go at doing this by shifting focus a little, citing the influence of British club music as a touchstone for the sound of the album. This is both apt, due to Jamie Smith’s success as a DJ and producer, and noticeable in the way that beats are used on the album. Compared to the debut, the beats play a more important role, determining the form of the songs moreso than on the previous album, where the sparse guitar took that role. With that element either missing from the record or pushed back in the mix save for a few moments, the songs take on a more hazy and ambient structure, with the synths and bass lines hanging in the ether more than ever. Along with this, the tempo is also much more deliberate than on the debut, which puts the album in danger of just being pretty, but dull and directionless. Thus, the songs are very much dependent on the usage of those beats in order to hang together. Does it work?

Well…sometimes. It’s telling that what’s probably the best song on here, “Chained,” has a very pronounced and forward, if simple, guitar line propelling and aiding the beats in holding the song together. As a matter of fact, you could say that about the first four songs on the album, all of which make effective use of guitar to add much needed texture to the songs and make the slower, dreamier atmosphere work for them without sounding completely listless. On the flip side, you have the last two tracks of the record, “Swept Away” and “Our Song,” both of which succeed because they do something other than just let the fundamental concept of the album be. “Swept Away” is especially beautiful, and works because it pairs the club-oriented beats of the album with well-placed piano and very affecting melody and vocal performances from Sim and Romy Madley Croft. In a way, it is the stated concept of the album at its most realized, and a picture of what the album really could have been, for better or worse.

But if “Swept Away” is an example of how to convey “XX based on club music” well, then the middle third is how to do it wrong and how to make it as boring and limp as possible. It’s not that the ingredients aren’t there, they all sound like songs that the band would make. The problem is that they lack even the most base amount of energy and inspiration that marked the first album and a large chunk of this album. Of those five songs, “Reunion” through “Unfold,” only “Missing” shows a level of songwriting and song composition even close to those better songs. Everything else in that range makes all of the mistakes that I was hoping that this album wouldn’t make, and it suffers terribly for it. If it weren’t for “Missing,” this stretch would only be known for just how indistinct it sounds. Over the past three weeks, I would try and try to remember the melodies from this stretch and constantly fail. The synths hang and swirl, they take up space, but the song utterly fails to go anywhere, do anything in the space that they take up, or generally evoke anything other than a basic knowledge of how to execute XX clichés in a certain context, which shouldn’t be happening to a band on its second album.

I attribute this to the loss of Qureshi on guitar, as you could notice a distinct difference in the way that the guitar was used from the self-titled album to Coexist. On the former, the lines seemed sharper and more prominent as they directed the songs through its most quiet and spacious stretches. It was what stabilized everything, the anchor when Sim and Croft’s vocals took the track to new heights. It was basic, but it worked extremely well for them. With her guitar gone, none of that is really present here save for a few songs, and the absence shows. Nothing has changed about what the vocalists do, or how well they do it, but when something that important is subtracted from a mix that doesn’t have a lot of ingredients in it, and nothing is really done to adequately supplement what’s left, you get left with something that wows at times, and flirts with the half-assed at others.

It’s really too bad, as I really like what I do like on here quite a bit, and I can’t emphasize enough what gems “Chained” and “Swept Away” really are. However, you can’t have a middle section as unmemorable as this album does and expect me to like it all the way through. It’s good, but ultimately disappointing in the end. A shame, honestly.

The Verdict:

Solid 6 out of 10

The hype was loud during a week of events involving fighters arriving at the hotels being met by a plethora of media. The gritty, plodding power puncher Chavez Jr was viewed by a lot of members in the media as the man to defeat Sergio Martinez because of the constant pressure he produces in the ring and Sergio had shown in previous fights a tendency to get tired in rounds 6-9 before getting a second wind. The talk was so loud about Chavez Jr. winning that I even questioned why I picked Martinez in the first place. What did all of these people know that I didn’t? To sum it up, this fight was the Fight of the Year before one punch was thrown. People did not know whether the smaller Martinez could outbox the much larger Chavez Jr or if he would fall victim to the body punches, much like a very good and game Andy Lee.

What we learned after Saturday night’s event was Martinez is able to outbox nearly any man in the world. For 11 rounds he out boxed and outclassed Chavez Jr, who looked dejected and utterly beaten mentally as much as physically. One of things that is often forgotten about Martinez is while his power would not translate against Chavez Jr, who rehydrated up to around 185 ish, his hands are like small razor blades that with speed pierce the skin and abuse the face of his foes. After 7 rounds, Chavez Jr, who usually is a boastful, arrogant and braggadocio in the ring, began to take deeper breaths with visible red marks on his face, as he appeared nothing more than a movable punching bag for Martinez who was clearly the faster of the two. To say that fight was lopsided for the first 11 rounds would be a lie. Although Martinez clearly won every round, Chavez stood a puncher’s chance in nearly every round making fans of Martinez gasp with “Oh nos” when Chavez would back him into a corner. Martinez would stubbornly engage in a war with his back against the ropes and it was clear that we were viewing a classic example of a boxer vs. a puncher and the fans of both fighters passionately wanted their fighter to prevail.

Then it happened, what makes folklore or legends, what justified the $50 I spent on the PPV. In the 12th round, Chavez caught Martinez with a flurry of punches that floored Martinez and nearly knocked him out. The last minute of the fight was high drama; no one was seated, most everyone screaming at the top of their lungs, not one person watching the fight unmoved. The last minute of the fight was what boxing is about and in many ways it reminded me of the story of Joe Louis vs. Billy Conn. In that fight Conn had won all the rounds of the fight until he decided to slug with Louis instead of out box him which ultimately led to a KO for Louis. Then there is the comparison to his father’s epic war in which he KOed a foe with 0:02 seconds left in the fight. With time ticking it was not in the cards for Chavez Jr to become a legend in his own right on this night. The one thing we can take away is that though Martinez was floored, he decided to fight; he refused to clinch and allowed viewers to experience the last minute of the fight in near slow motion.

Yet as I sat watching the fight the mood and vibe of the non-boxing fans around me was that the fight was fairly uncompetitive and that it was all hype. It was painful to see, because none of them invested in the 24:7 or the previous Chavez Jr fight where he looked unstoppable against a very game Andy Lee or how people had felt that Sergio Martinez was declining at the age of 37 after having fought a few less than spectacular fights. As if a narrative could be written of a back in forth brawl in the ring, as if the narrative of the naturally bigger man isn’t compelling in its own right.

So know where do they go from here? Quite simply, it seems as though they are both headed to Cowboys stadium for a Cinco de Mayo rematch that will be much bigger. I truly believe that no matter what, a great boxer will always beat a great puncher. I think Sergio will once again out box Chavez Jr to become a much richer man as they would fill up all 100,000 seats surely and probably look to put a superstar on the undercard as well. The one thing I do think is for certain is Freddie Roach is more than likely going to be done with Chavez as he seemed disgusted with Chavez Jr, even saying that he thought about throwing in the towel as well as doubting if Chavez Jr could get the knockout.

In the undercard affairs of Chavez Jr/Martinez, Guillermo Rigondeaux looked human finally after getting wobbled, but don’t let that take away from the fact that he won 10 out of the 12 rounds with Robert Marroquin easily. Matthew Macklin made quick work of Joachim Alcine after knocking him down two times in the 1st round. The ref finally stepped in and stopped it after he was not responding to punches towards the tail end of the 1st round. Needless to say, an impressive win for Mack The Knife though it appeared that Alcine never really showed signs of wanting Rocky Martinez to win a fight against Miguel Beltran Jr. For the vacant WBO Super featherweight title by split decision. I must note I had Beltran Jr. winning the fight by one round, it was a very close fight and at times a very messy and sloppy affair. I can honestly say I am not sure how I feel about. I truly wanted to enjoy this fight, but somehow never quite got into it. I could tell that it was a war and a show of heart from both fighters
As for the fight at the MGM Grand that took place at the same time, Canelo Alvarez battered a much smaller Josesito Lopez into submission knocking him down three times before having the fight stopped in the 5th. The one thing that might get forgotten as the year passes is that when Canelo started hitting Josesito, Josesito was landing good punches and making it a compelling fight. The problem is truly the fight should never have been made; Josesito Lopez came up from 140 lbs to 160 lbs to take a fight with one of the best Mexican prospects in years and paid for it. The way of talking about the fight to someone who did not see it would be like explaining how a bully takes a smaller student’s lunch money. Sadly, the majority of fans did not know this going in and just saw Canelo as a true monster who can defeat anyone, which may or may not be true.

Though I would like to point out that while people are rallying for Canelo to fight Mayweather, I do not think Canelo is ready yet. His hand speed is not at the level of Mayweather and Canelo has yet to fight a true defensive fighter that is in his weight class. He also has issues with stamina that have occurred in the past. All in all, Canelo still needs to take a few fights with fighters like Carlos Molina to show to the fans that he truly is the man at his division to create a demand for that fight. Now I am very pro-Canelo, I think he is truly legit and that this fight, which was a true mismatch, was more the match makers being stuck between a rock and a hard place, but a true Canelo hater can point to the fact that he is essentially beating the ghost of ex’s fighters and guys looking to get a paycheck. We have yet to see Canelo in the ring with a true fighter in his division that we know about or have followed for a good period of time and considered a prospect . With all of this said, if he could fight Carlos Molina by the end of the year, he not only would potentially set up a FOTY type match, but would earn over more “hardcore” fan respect.

As for the loser, Josesito Lopez has had a hell of year who will be a “name fighter” for the next 2-3 years because of it. Though he lost the fight – he won in the sense that his heart and courage can never be questioned. For those who do not know, Josesito came back to defeat Victor Ortiz in the summer by breaking Ortiz’s jaw and forcing Ortiz to quit on the stool. He then moved up drastically in weight to fight Canelo only to find out that size does matter, as he was over powered by the much bigger Canelo. As the year comes to an end, Josesito will probably be looking at either a Victor Ortiz re-match or a Jessie Vargas re-match, both of which could headline a card and the fight with Ortiz might fill up an arena. Either way, Josesito, though beaten and battered, is now much richer and eying much bigger fights with potentially more fans than ever; in a weird way it was as if neither fighter lost.

In the undercard of Canelo/Lopez, we saw action head to toe – as one of my favorite fighters Jhonny Gonzalez lost to Daniel Ponce De Leon. The fight was stopped due to an accidently clash of heads in the 10th round forcing the fight to be stopped because of a cut over Gonzalez’s eye. Though the fight was close, Ponce De Leon won on the cards and is now the WBC featherweight champion, though if ever you could ask for a rematch this would be the case. Marcos Maidana showed improved boxing skills under the tutelage of famed boxing trainer, Robert Garcia, as he TKO Jesus Soto Karass in the 8th round. On behalf of fight fans everywhere, can we please get the Lucas Matthysse vs. Marcos Maidana fight already? In the opening bout and potential best fight of the night, Leo Santa Cruz who looks to be a star on the rise, used vivacious body punches to force Eric Morel to quit after 8 rounds of fighting. Santa Cruz used a non-stop body attack that made even my ribs sore as each punch eked through.

All in all, what this weekend showed was whether you watched boxing on PPV or on Showtime, maybe even on one of those dreaded and dastardly streams, boxing was at the forefront of the sports world for one night and that can do only one thing , help the sport.

DOOM was faced with it after an overseas tour and a misconception about his residential status left him on the outs with US immigration and living in South London an ocean away from his wife and kids. Musically, at least, DOOM answered with a dark, dense and constantly twisting album full of examination of the world around him and his place within it.

His partner in crime for all of this is Houston-based rapper/producer Jneiro Jarel, a musician who can be described as in the mold of other, more well-known rapper producers such as Madlib, Oh No and especially in comparison to the first few years of Jarel’s career, J Dilla. Well, let’s modify that a bit: He’s in their mold, if you lined the dye cast with a little bit of lead and didn’t extract it until 2009. Before that year, he was a weirder, yet less interesting version of Dilla, making obtuse Soul-influenced Hip-Hop that never failed to stun with how uninteresting it sounded when it was just Jarel over them (whether he was Jarel, Dr. Who Dat or working as the members of Shape of Broad Minds made no difference) or how much better and more vibrant everything sounded when someone else rapped over the beats. In 2009, it seems that he got the memo and made an album with one of the collaborators that made me want to hear him produce for others in Khujo Goodie. Willie Isz’ Georgiavania was a fantastic breakthrough for Jarel, with beats that were full of life and experimentation that meshed fantastically with Khujo’s Southern drawl and stories (For fans of that project, we get a short, minute and a half long Willie Isz reunion on this record in “Stay Kaps”). The energy carried over to Jarel’s solo album Fauna, inspired by Brazilian music indigenous, countercultural and popular (the Kayapo, Bossa Nova and the Tropicália movement are all referenced in some way on the record), as well as the Amazon rainforest conservation movements that it was made to support. The result was an enjoyable fusion of all of this with Jarel’s electronic tendencies, the spirit of which is brought to this album.

While that spirit exists on Key to the Kuffs, it’s quite a bit more toned down than the eclecticism of Georgiavania, representing an obtuse, yes, but also more direct sound than the Willie Isz project did. The only production that can be called truly weird in any way is “Banished,” a synth-heavy pulse-pounder of a track that may outright confuse fans of DOOM’s more organic and soulful style of production. Other than that, any judgments on its ability to alienate you will strictly depend on your tendencies as a listener. For the uninitiated to this type of Hip-Hop, they might have a very tough time adjusting to the sound. Hell, even for those who know of the other JJ DOOM collaborations like “Let’s Go,” there will be quite the adjustment.

To be more specific, there may be a more difficult than usual adjustment to DOOM ‘s rapping, as he attunes himself to the tenor of the beat that he uses, rather than having Jarel craft instrumentals around his specific talents, a possible side-effect of DOOM’s exile in London. The greatest concession Jarel makes is using samples of the classic English capers that DOOM admitted to consuming his time with when the story of his exile broke, and even then, it’s still a highly electronic album. This means, of course, that one gets a bit of a different rapper than the one that we’ve seen and heard on albums past. It’s yet another alienating element of the music, but it represents a willingness on DOOM’s part to adapt and shapeshift when many rappers would not care at all for doing so. The result is a fresh sound that is located at a sort of halfway point between DOOM and Jarel’s tendencies. Jarel sacrifices a tiny bit of his inscrutability, making slightly more conventional beats, and DOOM responds by making his flow somehow even more complex and changeable to match. It’s more off kilter, multisyllabic and non-sequitur than I can ever remember it being, which is fine and highly invigorating sometimes (Hell, Jarel even sounds invigorated in his solo appearances on the record), other times, however, you get the first two actual songs on the project, which achieve being off-kilter without actually being all that good. While “Guv’nor” is merely offputting and improves with familiarity, “Banished” is especially galling, as it takes a fantastic beat and slaps DOOM’s double-time flow over it, which seems like a good idea, but just comes out as sloppy all around.

For the most part, however, DOOM’s rhyming in the new musical environment yields great results after “Bite The Thong,” his rumination on the nature of pop music featuring pretty damn good pop musician (for a given value of “pop”) Damon Albarn on the chorus. His topics run the gamut, with global political economy and British slang being notable ones. The best handled are threefold: “GMO,” a ridiculous treatise on everything in genetically modified food that can kill you (or at least fill men with estrogen), “Wash Your Hands,” a hilarious look into the mind of a mysophobe, and “Winter Blues,” detailing DOOM’s thoughts about being away from his wife, which also serves as an interesting tract on how to deal with double consciousness. “Winter Blues” in particular is touching and surprisingly fantastic, tapping into emotions that he only visits every so often, and was an honest shock in this environment. DOOM deals with these topics are dealt in the way that you’d think he would, with humor and through an off-kilter point of view, and the songs are the better for it, giving a taste of classic DOOM in an unfamiliar environment.

Despite all of these compliments and the fact that I’ve been listening to this for pretty much the last month straight, it fell just a little bit flat for me. This can be attributed to the fact that there seems to be an aura of a feeling out process that pervades the record; the fact that their styles don’t seem to naturally mesh in concept leads to the album not bearing itself out in the way that one would think that it would, with the completeness that something like Madvillainy or Take Me To Your Leader had. The experiments seem less fully realized than they did on those two records and it falters a bit as a result. It’s still a good record, but it seems more like a group attempting to figure out their sound before coming with a more complete version of themselves on a subsequent album. One may or may not attribute this to the duress under which this was recorded, but the result is something that feels like it’s slightly less than the sum of its parts.

Nevertheless, this was fantastically enjoyable, an album I’d have no problem recommending to others to give a shot. While it’s a step down from both man’s best, it represents the best in both artists. It’s DOOM at his most complex and slippery, stepping up to the challenge of a new frontier and presenting a difficult album to match a difficult and unfamiliar time in his life (the cover of the album will tell you as much), while it represents Jarel at the most accessible he’s been in nearly a decade, since the soul of his early-mid 2000s records failed to endear themselves to me. Hopefully, we get to hear more of this combination in the future, but I’m willing to just enjoy the wonky Rap that we got out of this iteration if that doesn’t occur. You should too.

The Verdict:

Strong 7 out of 10
